What is IV Sedation Dentistry?
Dental fear and anxiety are powerful emotions. It is estimated that up to 20% of Americans don’t go to the dentist at all because of it. This phobia can have a huge impact on your oral health because you are not receiving proper checkups and care for any possible issues. Fortunately, there are solutions that help dental anxiety.
Intravenous sedation is practiced by Dr. Carley here at Mountain and Sea Dental and Associates to ensure his patients feel calm and comfortable during their treatment. It allows you to safely sleep through your procedure using controlled, tranquilizing medications with an IV.
Is IV Sedation Safe?
Undergoing a dental implant procedure can be extremely fearful for many patients. As a qualified sedation dentist in Santa Barbara, Dr. Carley will first provide you with an oral medication to help you relax and then will administer your IV sedative to you right before your procedure.
IV sedation is extremely safe and will last throughout your entire appointment as you receive a new smile with dental implants. We can also provide different amounts when using IV sedation so it can accommodate each patient’s level of fear in every procedure.
You will still be conscious and capable of breathing on your own when using these sedatives, but you will be completely at ease. The various levels of IV sedation here at our Santa Barbara dental office include:
- Minimal sedation: An extremely relaxed state, but you’re still awake.
- Moderate sedation: Also called “conscious sedation,” you may doze off, slur your words when speaking, and not remember the entire procedure.
- Deep sedation: Likely to sleep through the procedure and you’ll have little to no memory of it.
To guarantee complete safety, we recommend you have a driver for this appointment. Driving to and from our office is not recommended because you may still be drowsy from the medication.
